Who this exam is for

The Foundation exam is the first step on the Esri certification ladder. It is designed for:

  • Students finishing a GIS course or program
  • Career changers who have spent ~6–24 months learning ArcGIS Pro
  • Professionals from adjacent fields (planning, environmental, surveying, AEC) who want to formalize their ArcGIS Pro skills
  • Recent grads applying to entry-level GIS analyst, GIS technician, or GIS intern roles

It is not intended for people with no ArcGIS Pro experience. If you have never opened ArcGIS Pro, complete our ArcGIS Pro Learning Path first.

What the exam tests

The exam covers four domains. Memorize these weights — they tell you where to spend study time.

What's NOT on the exam

The Foundation 2025 exam is intentionally entry-level. The following topics are beyond scope and appear on the Associate or Professional exams instead:

  • ModelBuilder and Python scripting (arcpy)
  • 3D scenes, voxel layers, and CityEngine
  • Network Analyst extension (advanced routing, OD matrix)
  • Spatial Analyst advanced raster modeling
  • ArcGIS Enterprise administration
  • Topology rules and validation
  • Imagery / Image Analyst extension workflows
  • Custom geoprocessing tools and tasks

If you're planning to take the Associate later, you'll get to these. For the Foundation, don't over-study.
