Study Plan

Three plans for three timelines. Pick the one that matches the time you can actually commit each week, and stick to it.

Pick your plan

Plan Hours / week Total hours Best for
🚀 4-week sprint 12–15 ~50 You already have ~6 months of ArcGIS Pro experience
⏱ 8-week balanced 6–8 ~55 Working students, career changers studying part-time
🐢 12-week steady 3–5 ~50 First exposure; want to lock in concepts thoroughly

All three plans cover the same content. Total study hours are similar — only pacing changes.

Week 8 — Practice + exam

🐢 12-week steady (3–5 hours/week)

Ideal if ArcGIS Pro is new to you.

Weeks Focus
1 ArcGIS Pro foundations: install, projects, ribbon, Catalog. Interface
2 Map Layers, basemaps, adding data
3 Symbology — try every renderer at least once
4 Labeling, label classes, halo, expressions
5 Coordinate Systems, GCS vs PCS
6 Vector + Raster data formats
7 Attribute Tables, edits, Joins & Relates
8 Select by Attributes + SQL chapter
9 Select by Location, spatial relationships
10 Buffer / Clip / Intersect / Dissolve / Spatial Join
11 Layouts, Exporting, Sharing
12 Two passes of Practice Questions. Take the exam.

End each week with 5–10 practice questions. Track your weak domains and re-read those pages.

How to study (independent of plan)

The 70/30 rule

Spend 70% of study time doing and 30% reading. Open ArcGIS Pro, replicate every concept on real data, then read the docs to fill gaps. You'll retain 5× more than from passive reading.

Daily checklist

  • Did I open ArcGIS Pro today and click on something?
  • Did I do at least 1 hands-on exercise?
  • Did I review yesterday's practice questions for any I got wrong?
  • Did I check 1 thing off this week's plan?

What to memorize

You don't have to memorize everything, but you must memorize:

  • EPSG 4326 = WGS84 (geographic), EPSG 3857 = Web Mercator (projected)
  • Datum vs projection — datum models the earth, projection flattens it
  • Buffer = zone around feature; Clip = cookie-cutter (input attrs only); Intersect = overlap (all attrs); Dissolve = merge by attribute
  • Select by Attributes uses SQL; Select by Location uses spatial relationship
  • Layer Properties is per-layer; Map Properties is per-map (CRS, transformations)
  • Web Layer vs Web Map vs Package — three different sharing methods
  • Reference scale locks symbol size at a chosen scale

Daily resource allocation

You can mix-and-match free resources:

Resource Type Time
This guide (4 domain prep pages) Read ~2–3 hr each
Esri MOOC: ArcGIS Pro: Essential Workflows Video ~6 hr
Esri MOOC: Performing Analysis with ArcGIS Pro Video ~6 hr
Esri free training: catalog Self-paced varies
Our ArcGIS Pro Learning Path Read + practice ~20–30 hr
YouTube (recommended channels) Video varies
Practice Questions Self-test ~3 hr

→ Next: Data Management (32%).
